Lighting Wearables
This research develops from my practice using emitted light as the main element inspiring and informing the creative process. The aim of my PhD research was to explore and articulate the use of light as an innovative “material” for designing wearables. The introduction of electronics in jewellery and in particular the use of light emitting diodes (LEDs), raise interesting questions about the identity and the role of the jewellery object, especially in relation to other electronic appliances worn on the body, or to other lit objects working as body adornment, but commonly recognised as gadgets. The articulation of a vocabulary for the material “light”, appropriate to the field of contemporary jewellery, draws from a practice-based model of research, where experimentation and reflection in and through practice are the fundamental aspects of the methodological approach.
